In these days, in which England is celebrating being back on the throne with the best club football teams in Europe, it might be hard to concentrate on other sports, but it is important to remember that on the same day that Arsenal will play against Chelsea in the Europe League final in Baku in Azerbaijan (what a strange place for two London teams to play), it will be time for the Cricket World Cup opening in London.

As we are used to, the opening match of the tournament is attended by the hosting country, that is England. And who will England play against? South Africa!

England – South Africa at The Oval in London

The match between England and South Africa will be played at The Oval in London, a stadium located in the very southern parts of London. Normally the pitch is used by Surrey County Cricket Club, but on May 30th, this will be the venue which will host the opening of the Cricket World Cup in 2019.

The venue has a long history, and it has been the home of the Surrey County Cricket Club since 1845. The venue will be used for quite a lot of matches during the cricket world cup, and together with The Lord’s they will be the stadiums in London which will be used during the world cup. And let us tell you, the match to be played at these stadiums are among the most important… not only the opening match, but also one of the semi-finals and the grand final itself on July 14th.

England are the big favorites to win the tournament itself, and South Africa shouldn’t cause them much trouble. The hardest opponents of England in the tournament will be India and Australia (if the bookmakers tell us the truth), but in a tournament anything can happen, and with the pressure from the home crowd, it will be interesting to see if England will manage to live up to the expectations.

The rest of England’s matches during the cricket world cup

There will be a total of 10 teams taking part in the world cup, and England will play against every single one of them. Here you can see the different matches in which England will play and where they will be.

  • May 30th, England – South Africa, The Oval
  • June 3rd, England – Pakistan, Trent Bridge (Nottingham)
  • June 8th, England – Bangladesh, Cardiff
  • June 14th, England – West Indies, Southampton
  • June 18th, England – Afghanistan, Manchester
  • June 21, England – Sri Lanka, Leeds
  • June 25, England – Australia, London (The Lord’s)
  • June 30, England – India, Birmingham
  • July 3, England – New Zealand, Chester-le-street

As you can see, England will play one match in every city in which there is a venue during the tournament, making sure that all of England get a chance to cheer for their heroes. But, if they make it to the semi-finals, they will either play at Old Trafford in Manchester or in Birmingham, before they return to The Lord’s in London for the cricket world cup final.

The most interesting matches for England will be the match against Australia at The Lord’s in London on June 25th, and of course the match against India in Birmingham on June 30th.

Have you been to London and fallen in love with the city? Or maybe you fell in love with the cute cops and the clothes they are wearing? Would you like to get a taste of London as you go home and watch some great police shows on Netflix taking place in London and in England? Here are two suggestions from the London Guide editors.

Have you ever heard of Jed Mercurio? He is a brilliant director and story-writer, and he is the mastermind behind both the TV shows we are about to recommend. It is important to notice that both the recommend shows are BBC productions, making them even better when it comes to bringing the true atmosphere of England into the shows.

So, which are the shows you should watch it you want to listen to British English, see police-officers in the traditional clothes the coppers were in England, and so much more?

Bodyguard

Bodyguard is an amazing BBC series consisting of only six episodes, making it easy to watch and easy to digest. But you should still be careful, it is very addictive, and after a few episodes you will not be able to stop until you are finished with the entire thing.

Richard Madden has received several awards for his amazing role as a copper who turns into a bodyguard of a very debated politician in England. It is a hard job, especially considering the fact that lots of people hate the politician he is to protect.

Throughout the story, we follow the incidents and we also get a very clear insight into the life of the character of Richard Madden. If you want to watch an amazing TV show tonight, go for Bodyguard. It can be seen in almost all Netflix regions, and you can also watch it at the BBC website. If you live outside the UK, find out more about how you can watch the BBC abroad in this YouTube video.

Line of Duty

This is yet another TV series created by Jed Mercurio. But, while Bodyguard is a show only consisting of 1 season (even though there are rumors about a new season coming later), Line of Duty is made up of 5 seasons, and we are promised that a sixth season is in the making as well. The fifth season just premiered on BBC in England, and it is the result of a fantastic response to the show in England. The first three seasons aired on BBC2 in England, but due to its success, they decided to air the fourth season on BBC1, something that made it enjoy twice as many visitors in season 4 compared to the earlier seasons.

Line of Duty
Line of Duty

In Line of Duty, we meet some police officer who try to discover and stop corrupt officers within the police force. That might not be the most convenient job, and if for sure isn’t a way to popularity among fellow police officers, but it is a job that needs to be done.

Line of Duty isn’t as fast paced as Bodyguard, but here the story is built up on solid grounds, and you will quickly be drawn into the story.

If you have to pick only one…

I would certainly go for Bodyguard, simply because of its higher pacer and more intense action. But, if you are in for the long run, then you will have many more hours in front of the screen with Line of Duty.

But, why pick only one? Go for Bodyguard first, and then you can start with Line of Duty afterward. You will probably start binge-watching that as well after watching a couple of episodes!

I will visit England and London in March 2019. I am frequently using Netflix, and I wonder if I can use my Netflix subscription while in England?

Yes, you can use your Netflix subscription while visiting London. In other words, in between your visits to the British Museum, the Big Ben, and London Eye, you can easily watch Netflix. You should be aware of the fact that you will find different programs and content as you visit England, after all, the Netflix catalog is different in every nation of the earth. As a result, you will find stuff on Netflix in England that you cannot find in your home country (this is good), but you will also discover that some of your favorite content from home cannot be found on Netflix in England.

Can I watch Netflix in the UK?

One of the hottest shows currently available on Netflix in England is Suits season 8. It cannot be streamed in any other Netflix region, only on Netflix in the UK, so if you haven’t caught up with this season yet, make sure to stream it on Netflix while in England. Maybe you will miss Meghan Markle as you stream the eight season of Suits, but if you are lucky, maybe you can catch sight of her as you walk by Buckingham Palace in London instead?

If you come from within the European Union

If you have a Netflix subscription in a country within the European Union, the things described here will not work. How come? It is a new regulation that you bring with you your “home-region” whenever you visit another EU country. That is a bit complicated, but there are ways to fix this as well (if you really want to get access to English Netflix). If you want to do so, you can, for example, follow the instructions in this video or in this article!

One little advice from us is to not only visit the Netflix website while in England, but check out the BBC and the ITV website as well. Since these websites are blocked if you live outside England, you will suddenly be able to enjoy all the contents of these sites while in England. And at the BBC website you can, for example, stream The ABC Murders (a brand new Poirot series starring John Malkovich), you can stream the fantastic BBC series named Bodyguard (for which Richarcd Madden received a Golden Globe award), and if you are ready for some laugther you should stream all five seasons of Cuckoo at the BBC website.

At the ITV website, you can stream Britain’s Got Talent and other great and original ITV content.

In other words – You can use your existing Netflix subscription

For a long time, we thought that you needed a new Netflix subscription as you visited another country. Another popular service in England is Amazon Prime. If you have a subscription to their services in England and travel abroad, you will no longer be able to enjoy the benefits of your Prime membership in England anymore, even if you visit the United States (in which they also sell Amazon Prime subscriptions). Luckily Netflix doesn’t operate in that way, meaning that you can bring your Netflix subscription along as you visit London, with the only difference that you will see the local British catalog instead of your home catalog.

Do not forget to be a London tourist and not just a streamer

We hope you will enjoy your stay in London, and do not spend too much time in the room watching Netflix. You can do so when you go back home as well. Spend as much time as possible outside discovering London and eating some local food!

From March 11th till August 11th in 2019 there will be a fantastic exhibition in Tate Britain focusing on Vincent van Gogh and how he was influenced and inspired by Britain, and how he influenced British artists.

If you visit this exhibition in Tate Britain, you will be able to see more than 40 Vincent van Gogh works on display. Some of the works to be portrayed are Shoes, Starry Night on the Rhône and L’Arlésienne. There will also be two pictures on display that he made while being a patient at the Saint-Paul Asylum (At Eternity’s Gate and Prisoners Exercising).

Did you know that Van Gogh lived in England for several years? He enjoyed reading the novels of Charles Dickens.

Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2018

From October 18th until January 27th (2019), you can see some spectacular photos on display in the National Portrait Gallery in London. They are part of the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2018, a leading international competition celebrating the best of portrait photography from around the world.

The pictures on display are all taking part in the competition, and here you can see pictures made by professional photographers, but also photos made by amateurs. Some are prepared a long time beforehand, while other pictures are more impulsive pictures made to catch the moment.

More than 75 pictures will be on display, and among the pictures, you can find the winner picture which was awarded 15,000 GBP. Some of the pictures have never been displayed publicly before, while other pictures have been seen here and there. Not only can you see the pictures, but you can also get to know the stories behind the works.

If you are a fan of photography and extraordinary photos, this is an exhibition for you!

The entrance fee to the exhibition is 5 GBP, and it is well worth it.
