Cricket World Cup opening in London

In these days, in which England is celebrating being back on the throne with the best club football teams in Europe, it might be hard to concentrate on other sports, but it is important to remember that on the same day that Arsenal will play against Chelsea in the Europe League final in Baku in Azerbaijan (what a strange place for two London teams to play), it will be time for the Cricket World Cup opening in London.

As we are used to, the opening match of the tournament is attended by the hosting country, that is England. And who will England play against? South Africa!

Looking forward to the cricket world cup in England and Wales.

England – South Africa at The Oval in London

The match between England and South Africa will be played at The Oval in London, a stadium located in the very southern parts of London. Normally the pitch is used by Surrey County Cricket Club, but on May 30th, this will be the venue which will host the opening of the Cricket World Cup in 2019.

The venue has a long history, and it has been the home of the Surrey County Cricket Club since 1845. The venue will be used for quite a lot of matches during the cricket world cup, and together with The Lord’s they will be the stadiums in London which will be used during the world cup. And let us tell you, the match to be played at these stadiums are among the most important… not only the opening match, but also one of the semi-finals and the grand final itself on July 14th.

England are the big favorites to win the tournament itself, and South Africa shouldn’t cause them much trouble. The hardest opponents of England in the tournament will be India and Australia (if the bookmakers tell us the truth), but in a tournament anything can happen, and with the pressure from the home crowd, it will be interesting to see if England will manage to live up to the expectations.

The rest of England’s matches during the cricket world cup

There will be a total of 10 teams taking part in the world cup, and England will play against every single one of them. Here you can see the different matches in which England will play and where they will be.

  • May 30th, England – South Africa, The Oval
  • June 3rd, England – Pakistan, Trent Bridge (Nottingham)
  • June 8th, England – Bangladesh, Cardiff
  • June 14th, England – West Indies, Southampton
  • June 18th, England – Afghanistan, Manchester
  • June 21, England – Sri Lanka, Leeds
  • June 25, England – Australia, London (The Lord’s)
  • June 30, England – India, Birmingham
  • July 3, England – New Zealand, Chester-le-street

As you can see, England will play one match in every city in which there is a venue during the tournament, making sure that all of England get a chance to cheer for their heroes. But, if they make it to the semi-finals, they will either play at Old Trafford in Manchester or in Birmingham, before they return to The Lord’s in London for the cricket world cup final.

The most interesting matches for England will be the match against Australia at The Lord’s in London on June 25th, and of course the match against India in Birmingham on June 30th.

Are you going to follow the Cricket World Cup? Are you coming to London to see any of the cricket matches? Have a great time! For more information about the popular attractions and sights in London, look around here in our London Guide.

On August 11th in 2017, it is time for the Premier League kick-off in the 2017-2018 season. The kick-off will be made at Emirates Stadium in London where Arsenal will play against Everton.

London is the capital of England and what better place to have the Premier League kick-off, than in the capital of the nation. And what better place for a Premier League kick-off, than at the Emirates Stadium.

There will be several matches played in London already during the Premier League kick-off weekend. In addition to the match between Arsenal and Everton on August 11th, there will be two more matches played in London on August 12th.

More Premier League matches in London

On August 12th last years champions Chelsea will be visited by Burnley at Stamford Bridge. While Chelsea plays at Stamford Bridge, Selhurst Park will be packed with Crystal Palace fans cheering for their team to beat the newly promoted Huddersfield. Our guess is that after these matches, nine out of nine possible points will remain in London. But, what about the other London teams?

What about the other London teams?

Tottenham will play their first Premier League match on August 13th. They will then travel to St James Park, where they will play against another newly Premier League promoted team, Newcastle. A few hours later Manchester United will have their Premier League premiere in the new season. On the other side of the field, another London team will fight for at least one point, West Ham United.

Top football matches in London in September 2016

The Premier League is going strong and in September it is also time for the Premier League to start. Here are the best football matches to be played in London in September 2016.

There are quite a lot of clubs belonging to London, but the most famous London clubs are of course Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal. West Ham is also a big club, but they are still living in the shadows of the three big and popular London clubs. All of these teams will play in London in September 2016, but not all matches are as interesting as the other matches. Here we have selected a few highlights and if you are a football fan you will for sure find something to watch.

  • If you want to buy tickets for any of these matches, then you can do so at Viagogo.

The biggest of all matches

Manchester United vs Manchester City on September 10th

The biggest of all matches to be played in England in September 2016 will unfortunately not be played in London, but we have to mention it anyway. On September 10th it is time for Jose Mourinho and his disciples in Manchester United to play against Pep Guardiola and his disciples in Manchester City. This will be a fantastic match and people from all across the globe will  be looking forward to see this match. If you want to watch this and other Premier League matches online you can find more information here.

Tottenham vs Monaco on September 14th

It has been a while since Tottenham played in the Champions League, but now they are back in the most important club tournament in the world. Their opening match will be against Monaco, a team that recently won against PSG in French Ligue 1, something they also managed to do in the 2015-2016 Ligue 1 season. They have a strong squad, but is it strong enough to stop Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen at White Hart Lane? The London fans will be cheering with all their strength for their favorite team. Will you be among the fans?

Chelsea vs Liverpool on September 16th

It will be heated up atmosphere as Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool comes to Stamford Bridge on September 16th. Liverpool hasn’t been entirely successful so far this season, but that has also been due to bad luck and not scoring those necessary goals. In their last London match against Tottenham they ruled the match, but with a Spurs goal in the end of the second half the match still ended with a draw. As they travel to play against Chelsea on September 16th the opponent will be even harder, and we all wonder if it will be to hard a nut to crack for Jurgen Klopp?

Arsenal vs Chelsea on September 24th

If you want to be there at a real London derby, then the match between Arsenal and Chelsea on September 24th at the Emirates Stadium is the place to be. Who will win this London fight? Can Arsene Wenger and Arsenal stop Antonio Conte and his Chelsea team who have started the Premier League 2016-2017 season in such an impressing way? Arsenal has recently bought new players to strengthen their squad, but will these new players be enough to keep them in the top of the Premier League this season as well? Be there at Emirates Stadium on September 24th to find out!

Arsenal vs Basel on September 28th

You might think that this will be a boring match, but Basel is by far the best football team in Switzerland and it will not be an easy task for Arsenal at Emirates Stadium to beat the Swiss champions. If you want to watch the match on the Internet then it will be broadcasted on for example Fox Soccer 2 Go in the United States or you can watch it on SRF in Switzerland. We will of course cheer for Arsenal as a London team, but we have a feeling this might become a tougher match than most people would expect.

These were the football highlights that you can look forward to in London in September 2016. Will you be able to attend any of these matches? If you come to town make sure to visit London Eye and check out some attractions as well before match-start, and why not grab a traditional fish and chips for lunch on match-day?
