From Manet to Cézanne in the National Gallery

The National Gallery in London is one of the best art galleries in the world. Another fantastic gallery is the Courtauld Gallery in London, but it is closed for renovation work at the moment. So, what better to do with some of the pictures from the Courtauld Gallery in this period, than to let them be on display in the National Gallery in London?

Since the start of September 2018, the exhibition “Courtauld Impressionists: From Manet to Cézanne” has been on display in the National Gallery. It will be there until January 19th in 2019, so you still have some months left to visit the exhibition if it sounds interesting.

It is the first time since 1948 that the National Gallery will portray important Impressionist paintings from the Courtauld Gallery, and who knows when it will happen again. If you visit the exhibition you will discover more than 40 works from Daumier to Bonnard.

Visitors will also get more knowledge about Samuel Courtauld, and get an understanding of his vision, taste, and motivation for selecting the images he selected.

Cézanne’s Card Players and Man with a Pipe

Some of the most famous paintings that will be on display from the Courtauld Gallery are Cézanne’s Card Players and Man with a Pipe, Toulouse-Lautrec’s Jane Avril in the Entrance to the Moulin Rouge, Renoir’s La Loge, Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère and Seurat’s Young Woman Powdering Herself.

There will be pictures from the National Gallery displayed next to the pictures from the Courtauld Gallery.

Since this is a temporary exhibition an entrance fee of 7,5 GBP has to be paid. Most parts of the National Gallery is free to visit, but temporary exhibitions such as this one are not free to visit.

King Ashurbanipal of Assyria in the British Museum

Between November 8th in 2018 and February 24th in 2019, visitors are invited to learn more about King Ashurbanipal of Assyria in the British Museum.

King Ashurbanipal described himself as the King of the World, and at this exhibition, he is portrayed as not only a king, but also a warrior, a scholar, an empire builder, a kingslayer, a lion hunter, and a librarian. Doesn’t that sound like a guy worthy of some attention?

He was the king of Assyria between year 669–631 BC, and he reigned from the city of Nineveh (today in Iraq). We know little about the death of the great king, but not long after his death, the city of Nineveh was destroyed, and the Assyrian Empire came to an end.

Since the 1840s, we have learned more and more about King Ashurbanipal. That is the knowledge that will be given on to the visitors of this temporary exhibition in the British Museum between November 8th (2018) and February 24th (2019).

Christmas markets in London in 2018

London is an amazing city all year around, but if you come to London in December, make sure to check out some of the Christmas markets!

Christmas market tourism is booming, and there are millions of people traveling late November and throughout December every year to visit such markets all across Europe. Some of the most popular cities to visit in this period are Prague, Strasbourg, Krakow, Copenhagen, Budapest, Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg, and lots of others. But, one should not forget about London as you plan your Christmas market trip in 2018.

London is a giant city, so it cannot compete with the Christmas feeling in for example Vienna. But, there are some amazing Christmas markets and areas that you definitely should visit as you come to London in the Christmas market period.

The most famous of all the Christmas markets in London is located in Hyde Park. This is called Winter Wonderland, and it truly is a wonderland in this period. Here you can find lots of programs for kids and adults, and brand new in 2018 are programs like Peter Pan on Ice, Teletubbies Christmas Show, Ice Sculpting Workshops, The Enchanted Forest in The Magical Ice Kingdom and also something called The Comedy Club. These are only the newcomers in the area. Following the success of earlier years you can enjoy the fantastic ice rink in the area, a circus, a giant Ferris Wheel and, of course, shopping possibilities for those hungry, thirsty or looking for a nice souvenir.

Christmas market at Southbank Centre

There is a more traditional Christmas market located at Southbank Centre. This is a place where you can buy souvenirs, eat, and drink, and it is much easier to visit than the Winter Wonderland. Why? It has no entrance fee. The Winter Wonderland is an expensive experience as all the activities you do there cost money. So, if you would rather just walk around at a traditional market and spend money when you actually buy something, then the Southbank Centre Christmas market in London might be what you are looking for.

Watch the FIFA World Cup 2018 in London

Looking for a place to watch the FIFA World Cup 2018 in London? Here are some suggestions!

At the moment, I do not know of any typical public screening of the FIFA World Cup in London. It would have been tremendous with a giant screen at the Trafalgar square, but that is not going to happen. The main reason is probably the fear of terrorist attacks. In cities such as Brussels and Paris, they have restricted and/or banned all sorts of public screenings. In the recent years, we have seen that any big outdoor event that draws a crowd, also brings forth the bad guys. For that reason, we have also seen that Christmas markets have turned into heavily guarded events, and so also with other outdoor concerts and events.

If you want to watch the FIFA World Cup in London, our suggestion is therefore that you should visit a pub instead.

London is packed with pubs and sports pubs, so you do not really need any list. You can simply walk around, and you will find bars, pubs, and restaurants showing the World Cup everywhere. This might be true about all matches, but when England will play against Tunisia on June 18th, it will be especially true. The people of England love football, and now they have great expectations for their team. They have had that before as well (and ended up very disappointed), but hopefully, they will perform better this time.

Rodin and the art of ancient Greece [Exhibition]

The French sculptor Auguste Rodin visited London in 1881, and as he saw sculptures from Greece in the British Museum, he was greatly inspired. If you return to the museum today, you can see the result!

The exhibition in itself is a proof of the importance of art museums. If it hadn’t been for the British Museum in 1881, Auguste Rodin wouldn’t have seen the beautiful Greek sculptures in the museum, and his career might have moved in a different path. But, luckily the British Museum was alive back then, and it still is today.

A lot of the sculptures that Rodin saw in the museum back then was in poor shape and lacked heads and other parts. This led Rodin to make sculptures in the same way, without heads. Now, a long time after his death, you can see a large collection of the works of Rodin at this temporary exhibition in the British Museum. And to make it even more interesting, the exhibition will feature Rodin’s work next to some of the original sculptures from Greece that inspired Rodin back in 1881.
